60cm x 100cm
Weaver: Miguel

‘Benizaa (Clould people weavers) began to weave tapestries that depict our way of life for the tourist industry in Teotitlan Del Valle. This was an essential stage in our weaving culture because buyers started to see our weavings as works of art. This rug depicts a typical scene in a farming village in Oaxaca. Sheep were brought from Spain and were embraced into our culture to make rugs, however the word for sheep is very similar to the word for cotton in our native language: shiíli means sheep while shiili means cotton. Perhaps this was because our ancestors saw almost no difference in the weaving of cotton to the weaving of wool’

DIXZA RUGS ORGANIC FARM

The ancient way of weaving rugs in Teotitlan Del Valle, Oaxaca, is with a deep respect of the natural and spiritual world, with natural dyes and fibres, powered by muscle and firewood from renewable resources.

In this village is Dixza Rugs Organic Farm, home to an indigenous Benizaa family: Mario Bautista Martínez and Leonar Lazo González and their two sons Samuel Bautista Lazo and Celestino Bautista Lazo. The family are keeping the millenary weaving tradition alive, farming the land of their ancestors in a sustainable way and sharing the skills and knowledge of their culture through demonstrations and workshops.

‘When you buy one of our rugs, you are not just buying an object; you are bringing a piece of Zapotec woven tradition to your home. We share with you 10,000 years of know how, ancient stories and teachings that our ancestors have passed down from generation to generation in our oral tradition and weaving heritage’
